DAY & NIGHT

Thursday, August 5th, 2010

I saw Toy story 2 weeks ago and it was really really good, I teared up, i got made fun of for tearing up, but who wouldn’t tear up?!?! Probably since because i’m too old now too, reaching that age where i need to be responsible for stuff…!

Anyways, I didn’t get to watch DAY & NIGHT in full because there were some annoying circumstances, but as always Pixar always brings it even with the short film before the main feature. I thought this was extremely creative and was completely in awe of what peoples minds are capable of.

I can’t seem to be able to embed the short clip, so view it at the source.

OBJECTIFIED – documentary

Saturday, July 24th, 2010

I previously blogged about it’s precedent in a trilogy of films about design: Helvetica

I actually found this one MORE interesting than the helvetica documentary. My profession has nothing related to design, my profession has nothing to do with anything actually. But, objects are something that we all use each and single day, and seeing how something comes together is very amazing.

I recall a phrase said by a designer (not verbatim) on the BBC program : The Genius of Design (no longer online, and I can’t watch them on the BBC site because i’m not in the UK, anyone link? ;) )

“Good design is something that looks as though it hasn’t been designed.”

the film also features some big shot designers, like the apple guy, but it’s pretty LOL right now what with all the apple antenna issue, but i guess it’s not his fault since he only designs the physical body of the product. So i’m asking, if this item is beautifully designed (and no one can deny how gorgeous the iphone 4G is) but it fails to function, is it still well designed? probably not…

:)

HELVETICA – documentary

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

If one font, or design component defines the 20th century, it has to be helvetica! I finally decided to blog about this documentary that I saw a few months ago. Today I was at the super market and there’s this generic brand of food that only uses the color yellow and helvetica font face.

I think if I weren’t fearful of quality of foods, I’d buy only this brand, and decorate my immaculate kitchen with its font face and yellow color. I think it may be more appealing if the brand branched out and used different colors to represent the foods inside. Although it may be impossible to categorize all based on colors, but it would be interesting to see a can of tomato sauce with red background and white helvetica writing.

but, then again, i have an ugly kitchen, hardly worthy of all this trouble.

then again, i don’t cook so, yeah blah blah

check this documentary out for sure, it IS on itunes, but it IS also complimentary on some sites that use the thing called BT. yeah, go there

;)

will post about its sister film about objects, features some really amazing Japanese product designs, and from one of my favorite stores in the whole wide world, MUJI.

Hayao Miyazaki of Studio Ghibli says important things

Friday, July 16th, 2010

Studio Ghibli that has brought you Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Howl’s moving castle and much much more has one extremely brilliant man behind it (my favorite Studio Ghibli film was Whisper of the Heart, which Miyazaki wrote!)

ipads are a huge craze in Japan right now. Despite the fact they are not a country that lacks well designed things, just look at their toilets!

When Mr. Miyazaki was asked about ipads…

He doesn’t like the fact that a lot of people think it’s trendy and cool to have an iPad – basically he doesn’t like followers.

And when the interviewer responded saying that the iPad is convenient for getting information whenever and wherever,

Mr. Miyazaki responded, “Well, information anybody can get is not that important. You can’t get something really important through an ‘i-whatever’.” He added that information should be sought out in person and with the usage of your imagination, not through a device.

But, THIS —> he concluded by saying, “Don’t be a buyer, be a producer.”

I am not going to pretend that I don’t like new gadgets, even though I have a Sony Ericsson flip phone from 2007….! I think it’s important for young people to keep up with new technology, not simply because it’s cool to have a new thing but because these new things will be more and more abundant in the future, and whatever it is novel now will become the norm.

With that being said, it’s also important to not waste materials, so if your old iPhone still works, there’s no need to upgrade, you can save money, help the environment, and maybe MAYBE, keep Apple at bay and demand them that they maintain their best possible designs, technology, and customer service. So, not buying new things could do a lot of good sometimes.

but what he said about being a producer and not just a consumer is probably the most important.

To conclude this news-bit I will quote a wall paper that I saw the other day: “I like people who make stuff” ;)

(no iphone/ipad bashing here, I want an ipad, why not! but maybe wait till it has a front facing camera. I think I want an iphone too, but I can’t afford the data plans they sell here..)
